HIGH ANTISEISMIC CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS IN EFFECT IN ARMENIA - EXPERT

    13:45 * 16.07.14

Zaven Khlghatyan, Director of the Antiseismic Construction Department,
Seismic Service of Armenia, told reporters on Wednesday that the latest
earthquake in Vanadzor necessitates a new consideration of the problem.

"The Spitak earthquake in 1988 made it clear that antiseismic
construction in the Soviet Union was at a lower level that in
    present-day Armenia," he said.

In 1994, Armenia approved national standards of antiseismic
    construction.

"Even with some defects, present-day buildings are much safer,"
    Khlghatyan said.

On the other hand, Armenia is a seismically active area.

"According to the preliminary data, an earthquake similar to that in
Garni could destroy up to 40% of Yerevan's housing stock."
