    ** TOP STORY July 31, 2014
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    St. Thadeus and St. Sandukht
St. Thaddeus, St. Sandukht, and other imprisoned Christians by the
    19th-century Italian artist Juliano Zasso.

** Beginnings of the Christian Faith in Armenia
    ------------------------------------------------------------
On Saturday, August 2, the Armenian Church will observe the Feast of
St. Thaddeus the Apostle and St. Sandukht the Virgin. The story of
these two saints sheds light on the early days of Christianity in
    Armenia.

Imagine a time of great political and military struggle, a pagan
kingdom ruled by a powerful royal family-this was once Armenia. The
kingdom strongly clung to its inherited pagan practices until a
    strange man ventured to Armenia.

His name was Thaddeus, and he was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus
Christ. He preached in people's homes, in hidden underground chambers,
in marketplaces, and in the streets. People listened intently, and
moved by the Good News, many converted to Christianity.

Rumors of this unusual man reached a young girl named Sandukht, the
daughter of Armenia's king Sanatrouk. The Christian faith made such an
impact on Sandukht's life that she declared her belief in Christ and
was baptized. But when the king's spies reported the news to her
father, Sandukht was sentenced to jail.

The king asked his daughter to choose between the crown and the
sword=80'either she would renounce Christianity and serve as a pagan
princess or face death. Sandukht chose the sword, and became Armenia's
first Christian martyr. Shortly after Sandukht's death, Thaddeus was
also executed by the king. Their sacrifice planted the seeds of the
Christian faith in Armenia-a faith that 300 years later would become
the foundation on which Christian Armenia was to be built.

** CHURCH NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Soorp Asdvadzadzin Church in Aragatz, Armenia
The Soorp Asdvadzadzin chapel was re-consecrated in Aragats, Armenia,
    last Sunday.

** A New House of Worship in Aragats
    ------------------------------------------------------------
A newly renovated chapel in Armenia's Aragats village was
re-consecrated last Sunday, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our
    Lord.

The Soorp Asdvadzadzin chapel was built in the late 1920s and early
1930s, when survivors of the Armenian Genocide established the village
of Aragats, some 30 miles north of Yerevan. Inside the chapel, they
installed a khatchkar that they had brought with them from Mush, in
    historic Armenia.

During the darkest days of the Soviet period, the chapel was converted
into a storehouse. Years of neglect took their toll on the building,
which was under threat of collapse. Following Armenia's independence,
villagers gathered regularly for prayer at the site, but it was not
until the generous sponsorship of local benefactor Aghvan Karapetyan
that rebuilding the chapel became possible.

Last Sunday, the entire village gathered to celebrate the
re-consecration of their house of worship. Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan,
Primate of the Aragatsotn Diocese, performed the consecration
service. Children performed Armenian dances and sang songs. For
Mr. Karapetyan the day was especially moving as he witnessed the
baptism of his young grandchildren in the re-consecrated chapel.

** Diocese Welcomes AGBU Summer Interns
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Close to 40 participants in the AGBU New York Summer Internship
Program visited the Diocesan Center on Monday evening, July 28, where
they received a tour of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral and enjoyed
dinner with Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian.

The young people were greeted on the plaza of St. Vartan Cathedral by
the Very Rev. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, cathedral dean, and led on a tour
of the sanctuary by the Very Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan
    Vicar.

Later in the evening, they enjoyed dinner and conversation with
Archbishop Barsamian, who spoke to the group about the importance of
preserving the Armenian heritage in the diaspora. The Primate also
spoke about the ecumenical spirit of the Armenian Church, answered
questions about the church's outreach worldwide, and encouraged the
young people to take an active part in the life of the church.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
The Women's Guild Central Council (WGCC) held its first meeting of the
2014-2015 year at the Diocesan Center in New York on Saturday, July
    19. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, and Diocesan Vicar

the new board members. The council then discussed the priorities
established by the Women's Guild delegates and clergy at the 28th

-an initiative to erect four walls around a school building in
    Armenia's border village of Aygepar.

The village, located in the Tavush region, is in close proximity to
Armenia's border with Azerbaijan. Ceasefire violations have become
part of everyday life for local residents, with sniper fire regularly
aimed at civilian buildings, including the local school. Ayo! plans to
build four walls around the school area to protect it from bullets and
to allow students to safely use their playground.

Passers-by in Yerevan on July 19 stopped to learn about the project
and to contribute. A total of 137,660AMD (about $350 ) was raised for
the cause. Additional contributions to the Protective Walls project
