RUSSIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS IMPORTANT FOR SOUTH CAUCASUS REGION - EXPERT

    15:48 * 03.12.14

Political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan is sure the Armenian and
Russian Parliaments will ratify the treaty on Armenia's accession to
    the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

"Russia's relations with the EU are steadily worsening, which has its
impact on our region. In this context, Russian President Vladimir
Putin's visit to Turkey is most important. Oil prices are rapidly
falling, and we can feel the effect. It happened before as well,
but a critical situation is developing now," Mr Iskandaryan told
    reporters on Wednesday.

As Russia-West relations are getting worse, attempts are being made
to isolate Russia, which, in turn, is trying to consolidate relations
    with other nations.

"It is not only Turkey, but also China and India. The South Stream
project, in which Russia has invested over US $8bn, may involve the
nations as well. I cannot say what pressure it will prove to be on
    the West," the expert said.

With respect to Russian-Turkish relations, they are of importance
    for the region.

"If am not mistaken, Russia is Turkey's second major partner, while
Turkey is Russia's seventh largest partner. Recent years have seen
obvious improvement in Turkish-Russian relations. And now, during
Erdogan's presidency, Turkey feels less dependent on western policy
    than before," Mr Iskandaryan said.
