CIS SECURITY BODY CHIEF SAYS RUSSIAN BASE IN ARMENIA NO THREAT TO REGION

Yerevan, 13 March: The Russian military base in Armenia does not
threaten the states of the region, Nikolay Bordyuzha, secretary-general
of the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO], has told
National News Agency. To recap, Bordyuzha will arrive in Yerevan today.

"The main task of the Russian military base is to ensure stability
in the region, maintain Russia's security interests and implement
the tasks envisaged in the regulations of the CSTO in the format of
collective security. The presence of the Russian military base in
Armenia is clear evidence that Russia is asserting not only its own
interests but also the interests of its allies," Bordyuzha said.

According to Bordyuzha, the presence of the Russian military base
in Armenia has a single aim - to prevent undesirable developments
in the region. "But this all absolutely does not mean that the 102nd
military base acts against a state in the region. The matter is that
developments not related to interstate confrontation may take place
in such an unstable region like the Caucasus," Bordyuzha noted.

Bordyuzha believes those developments are, for example, such major
terrorist attacks that the special services will no longer be enough
to counteract them and real military force will be required.

article that the West should demand closure of Russian military bases
