This year the Institute is commemorating its 20th anniversary. Some special

ANEC CELEBRATES YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN SCHOOL
We reported earlier about a very successful Festival of Schools presented
by the Armenian National Education Committee last March. Seven schools from

THE PASSING OF EDWARD K. BOGHOSIAN, FOUNDING EDITOR OF
THE ARMENIAN REPORTER INTERNATIONAL
Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan will participate in funeral services for
Edward K. Boghosian, founding editor of The Armenian Reporter International,
who died early this week. Funeral services, officiated by Archbishop Khajag
Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church (Eastern), will
take place at St. Vartan Cathedral in New York City, tomorrow, Friday, June
16, at 10 a.m.
Archbishop Oshagan will offer condolences on behalf of His Holiness Aram
I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, who in a letter of condolence
expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the Boghosian family.
Eddie-as all knew him-founded the New York based weekly newspaper more
than forty years ago, in a bold experiment. Last year the 40th anniversary
of the newspaper was commemorated with a gala banquet, at which time
Archbishop Oshagan presented him with the Cilician See's Mesrob Mashtots
Medal on behalf of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I.
PRELATES MEET WITH CATHOLICOS IN ANTELIAS
His Holiness Aram I presided over a meeting of Prelates in the Antelias
headquarters of the Catholicosate of Cilicia earlier this month. The meeting
brought together a number of prelates who were in Lebanon on the occasion of
the ordination of three bishops, including the Eastern Prelacy's Vicar, V.
Rev. Fr. Anoushavan Tanielian, now Bishop Anoushavan. The clergymen
discussed various matters, including the upcoming Armenia-Diaspora
conference in Armenia in September, the educational conference at the
Catholicosate in August, and a number of spiritual and administrative
issues.
In a separate meeting His Holiness conferred with the Prelates and
members of their respective Executive Councils who had traveled to Lebanon
to attend the ordination of Bishops. His Holiness also met with a large
number of pilgrims from the Eastern Prelacy who traveled to Lebanon for the
ordination ceremony.
ST. GREGORY THE ILLUMINATOR'S DELIVERANCE FROM THE PIT
This Saturday, June 17, is the Feast of St. Gregory the Illuminator's
Emergence from the pit (khor virab). Gregory is the greatest figure of the
Armenian Church. He is recognized and memorialized in both eastern and
western hierarchical churches. The Armenian Church calendar reserves three
feast days specifically in his memory: Entrance into the Pit; Emergence from
the Pit; Discovery of His Remains. In addition to these three, there are
several feast days to which he is connected, such as, Feasts of St.
Hripsimiantz and St. Gayaniantz; Feast of Shoghakat, Feast of Holy
Etchmiadzin, Feast of King Tiridates (Trdat).
St. Gregory was condemned to the pit in 287 A.D. by King Trdat and the
persecutions of Christians in Armenia began. After the persecution and
martyrdom of a group of nuns who came into Armenia, led by Hripsime and
Gayane, Trdat came down with strange maladies and became insane. His sister,
Khosrovidukht, had a dream that Gregory was the only person who could heal
her brother. Miraculously Gregory was still alive. Trdat accepted baptism,
proclaimed Christianity to be the religion of Armenia, and proceeded to
facilitate the evangelization of the country.
After many years of service, Gregory retired to a cave on Mount Sepuh
where he died. Some of us have had the privilege of traveling to this
revered site in historic Armenia (eastern Turkey) and climb Mount Sepuh to
the remains of the monastery where Gregory spent his final years. He is one
of the principal Armenian saints and is venerated as The Illuminator. The
high-esteem that the Armenians hold for Gregory can, perhaps, best be seen
by the large number of Armenian churches named in his honor.
SUNDAY IS FEAST OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN
This Sunday, June 17, is the Feast day of Holy Mother Etchmiadzin, the
cathedral built by St. Gregory after his deliverance from the pit, to the
specifications he saw in a vision, and on the place marked by the Lord with
a golden hammer. This feast day commemorates the establishment of the
Armenian Church and the eradication of paganism.
The Cathedral of Etchmiadzin is the oldest example of a four-altar,
four-pillar, domed, cruciform church in Christian architecture.
AND DON'T FORGET DAD..
Sunday is Fathers' Day. The United States is one of the few countries in
the world that has an official fathers' day. Although there are many
different stories of who are where the first fathers' day was celebrated,
there is agreement that the most ardent promoter of the holiday was Mrs.
Bruce John Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who wanted to honor her father who
raised six children after the untimely death of his wife. It is believed
that the first Fathers Day was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. States
began lobbying Congress to declare an annual Father's Day. President Woodrow
Wilson approved the idea in 1916 as did President Calvin Coolidge who in
1924 suggested that it be a national event. However, it did not become an
official holiday until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson signed a
proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
SUMMERTIME..
Next Wednesday, June 21, is the first day of summer, the longest day of
the year.
