DIAMONDS NOT IMPORTED FROM RUSSIA INTO ARMENIA THIS YEAR

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 24, NOYAN TAPAN. The consignments of diamonds for
January-October 2006, which were envisaged by the intergovernmental
agreement signed between Russia and Armenia in 2001, have not been
imported into Armenia. The head of the Diamond Cutting and Jewelry
Making Department of the RA Ministry of Trade and Economic
Development Gagik Mkrtchian said during the November 24 press
conference that the reason is that the prices of Russian diamonds are
high, and it is not to the advantage of Armenia to bring diamonds
from Russia. "It is not a good thing that the agreement was not
implemented fully but this will allow Armenian enterprises to
establish their own links with Russian companies," he noted.

At the same time G. Mkrtchian underlined that this tendency is
observed in the whole world, as in recent years diamomd extracting
countries have conducted a policy requiring that diamonds should be
    cut in the same country.

According to him, no investments have been made in the Armenian
diamond cutting and jewelry making sector in the last 1-2 years.
Implementation of the program developed by the ministry will allow to
prevent the sector's decline and develop it.

    G. Mkrtchain stated that a visit of the Armenian prime minister to
Moscow is envisaged in the near future. During the visit, problems of
the diamond cutting sector and new ways of cooperation of Armenian
and Russian enterprises will be discussed.
