November 23 was a remarkable day for the Italian Armenians. A
cross-stone memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian
Genocide of 1915 was erected on the square of St. Nicolas church,
Rome. Ambassador of Armenia to Italy Ruben Shugarian, superior of the
Levonian Monastery Archimandrite Michael Muradian, prioress of the
the Immaculate Conception Order Euthoxia Qeshishian, representative
of the Mayor of Rome and the Commission for Culture Affairs Saverio
Caleotta, as well as representatives of Italian mass media were
    present to the ceremony.

The ceremony was opened by the representative of the Armenian Cause in
Italy Aleco Peziqian, who expressed his gratitude to Valter Veltroni
and noticed that it was the second time that the Italians once again
proved their devotion to the oppressed minorities by recognizing
the fact of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. "We bow
down before the martyrs of 1915 and promiss a peaceful and civilized
struggle through patience and dialogue, being sure that we fight for
values of the European civilization," he said.

Mr. Saverio Caleotta highly estimated the contribution of the Armenian
community of Italy to the social life of the country. Spokesman
of the Armenian Community Council Robert Atarian reminded of the
legilsation bill on the Armenian Genocide adopted by the Parliament
of Italy in 2000 and the declaration made by the Mayor's Counicl of
Rome. Ambassador R. Shugarian thanked the Rome City Administration for
such a initiative and said that the 15-year old Republic of Armenia
should take example of the Italian democracy.

Mr. Caleotta and Mr. Shugarian opened the Memorial and then it was
consecrated by Archimandrite Michael Muradian and Ernesto Mantara.
