A PLEASANT AFTERNOON BEETHOVEN TO BABADJANIAN
SONUS Piano Quartet returns to The Independent Theatre in North Sydney
for their second concert, The Passionate, on Sunday afternoon.
The 3.30pm concert will take listeners on a musical journey across
three centuries, savouring three national flavours from Beethoven's
early chamber music to the work of two 20th-century composers.
The three works include Beethoven's 1798 String Trio in G Major, Op.9
No.1, Spanish composer Joaquin Turina's 1931 Piano Quartet in A minor,
Op. 67 and Arno Babadjanian's 1952 Piano Trio in F sharp.
Turina's piano quartet embodies the refined chamber music writing he
experienced in Paris in the early 1900s.
Babadjanian's piano trio is rich in Armenian folksong and reminiscent
of Rachmaninov and Khachaturian in its musical expression and
grandeur.
Violinist Aiko Goto appears courtesy of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Freelance violist Jacqui Cronin has played with Australia's best
ensembles and orchestras and cellist Timothy Nankervis is a member of
the Sydney Symphony and Seraphim Trio.
Pianist Brenda Jones is a frequent recital partner to other musicians
in the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Symphony.
Jones said The Independent's acoustics and ``magnificent piano'' make
it ``the perfect venue'' for the Sunday afternoon concert series.
Music historian Michael McGregor will give a pre-concert talk with tea
and scones about the composers and their music.
