  • Armenians To Be Evicted From Armenian Church Flats, Calcutta

The Armenian Church Committee, whose Chairperson is a pawn in the hands of rapacious developers and land sharks, has obtained a Court order to evict the PAUL STEPHEN family from the flats in the Church premises.

Paul Stephen, an Armenian, was given the flat to house his large family many years ago. He lived there peacefully, till, MRS. SONIA JOHN, who was backed by city land sharks, took over as Chairperson of the Armenian Church Committee, Calcutta. Mrs. John began to make demands for this family to leave though the vast premises is fully vacant and no one will EVER occupy the flats. There is nor present reason for this family to leave.

When the family refused to leave, they were taken to Court and harassed. The electricity to the flat has been disconnected, no visitors are allowed to meet them, the gas supply for cooking their food has been cut-off. The gates are claosed at 8 Pm and once when the daughter tried to enter after 8 PM the security guards were ordered to shut her out. She had to sleep on the streets !

Yet, a huge valuable property, situated on Calcutta's famous Park Street, No., 46, was given by Mrs. John, to her frienids the "Maheshwari family" for a mere Rs .2 million ! This strange and corrupt woman can give away the Church properties of the Community to outsiders and chase away Armenians from the Church flats, which are in any case vacant !

    What a tragedy !

Please support us fro justice. To protect the Paul Stephen family and get rid of this corrupt person, Mrs. Sonia John.

Church eviction bid a community concern

This is with regard to the report ‘Church shuts gate on family’ (Metro, August 8). I find it difficult to understand why the church authorities are trying to drive away this poor family from the premises. The Armenian church committee is supposed to look after all the Armenians here. As there are hardly any Armenians left in the country and there are a lot of church properties which are being given on lease or sold as there is nobody to occupy the premises, Armenians, who are occupying the premises, should not be evicted. It is strange that the committee is trying to do exactly that. The Armenian church committee might ask the Stephens to perform some duties to the church, if it wants. There must be something wrong somewhere as there seems to be no apparent reason for an Armenian family to be made to forced out if they have been living in a church property for so long.

I, as an Armenian, would like all the community members to get together and solve the problem internally, without taking the issue to court and making a big issue of the whole thing. After all, this tarnishes the community’s image in society.
