RALLY IN JAVAKHETI TO DEMAND REGIONAL LANGUAGE STATUS FOR ARMENIAN

    ARMENPRESS
    Apr 13 2007

AKHALKALAKI, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS; Several non-governmental
    organizations in the predominantly Armenian-populated
Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia, which borders Armenia,
were to organize a rally today to demand that central authorities in
Tbilisi grant the Armenian language the status of a regional language.

Javakhk-Info news agency said the rally would be held in Akhalkalaki,
the region's capital. The agency said local authorities were likely
    to join it as well.

A coordinating committee said yesterday the rally is an initiative
of the entire Armenian population of the region.

The rally would ask the government in Tbilisi to ratify the European
Charter on Regional Languages and respect Georgia's international
commitments, which it assumed to protect the interests of its national
    minorities.
