ARMENIAN AND RUSSIAN ICHTHYOLOGISTS START RESEARCHING LAKE SEVAN

Armenian and Russian ichthyologists will start researching fish
population and water life in Lake Sevan at the end of September or
    in early October.

Director of the Hydroecology and Ichthyology Institution of the
Scientific Center of Hydroecology and Zoology, National Academy of
Sciences of Armenia (NAS), Boris Gabrielyan told ArmInfo that among
the researchers are scientists from the Institute of Inland Waters
Biology of Russian Academy of Sciences (IIW RAN) and Institute for
Ecology and Evolution Problems after A.

Severtsov. Research vessel "Gidrolog" of the IIW RAN will be used in
the research. Russian scientists intend to study the eutrophication
process in the lake, the tendency towards decrease in the population
of local species of fish and the state of hydrobionts (water life).

Last year's Armenian-Russian research of the lake registered
extremely rapid reduction of fish reserves. Over the last 10 years,
the reserves decreased over 11 times. At present, fish reserves
in the lake have decreased even more, the preliminary data of the
research say. Moreover, B. Gabrielyan says scientists have to buy
fish from poachers because their drift-net fishing proves useless
for lack of fish. Although the Armenian Nature Protection Ministry
takes measures to restore the population of Sevan trout - ishkhan,
these tiny fishes occur at nearby restaurants.
