MHER SHAHGELDIAN: PERSONALLY FOR ME, OYP LEADER IS CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENCY

YEREVAN, AUGUST 29, NOYAN TAPAN. "The leader of the Orinats Yerkir
Party (OYP) is the candidate for presidency. As of today, the OYP
chairman Artur Baghdasarian is one of the most popular and respected
political leaders in Armenia," the deputy chairman of OYP Mher
Shahgeldian stated at the August 29 press conference. At the same
time he noted that it is too early to speak about whether the party
will participate in the 2008 presidential elections by proposing its
candidate. In his words, the position of the OYP will be presented
after the party's congress to be held, in all likelihhod, after
mid October.
M. Shahgeldian said that they attach importance to joint discussions
by opposition members - regarding the format of participation in the
upcoming presidential elections. According to him, they will continue
participating in these discussions.
As for the party's position on the issue of nomination of the candidacy
of the first Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosian, Mher Shahgeldian
noted that L. Ter-Petrosian has not yet made any statement about
his nomination.
In his words, the OYP will present its position only after such
a statement.
