ARMENIA REFUSES ORGANIZE VISIT OF AZERBAIJANI COMMUNITY'S HEAD TO NAGORNO-KARABAKH

    Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan
    Aug 7 2007

Azerbaijan, Baku / Òrend corr K. Ramazanova / Azerbaijani Deputy
Foreign Minister, Araz Azimov, considers organization of the
next meeting of the representatives of Azerbaijani and Armenian
intelligentsia to be impossible for the time being.

According to Azimov, the situation is much tensioned now. He said
that Azerbaijani side wants to organize a visit of the head of
Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh Community, Nizami Bahramov, to the
occupied territories, however, Armenia does not agree. "We do not
know what Armenia is afraid of?" he said.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasus began in 1988
due to territorial claims by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Armenia has
occupied 20% of the Azerbaijani land including the Nagorno-Karabakh
region and its seven surrounding Districts. Since 1992, these
territories have been under the occupation of the Armenian Forces. In
1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which time
the active hostilities ended. The Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (
Russia, France and USA) are currently holding peaceful negotiations.
