GEORGIAN ARMENIANS SUBMITTED UNANSWERED LETTERS TO GEORGIAN OFFICIALS TO OMBUDSMAN'S OFFICE

    Regnum, Russia
    Aug 8 2007

Chief expert at Georgia's ombudsman's office Beka Mindiashvili
and coordinator of Ethnic Minorities Council Koba Chopliani
met Aug 7 in Akhalkalaki with representatives of the Council of
    Armenian Non-Governmental Organizations of Samtskhe-Javakheti
    (Armenian-populated region of Georgia).

Armenian representatives submitted to the Georgian ombudsman's staff
a memorandum called "Urgency of Improving Situation of Armenian
Population in Samtskhe-Dzhavakheti and Kvemo Kartli and Georgia's
Obligations Before the Council of Europe" in the Armenian and Georgian
languages. They also handed the office's staff a number of letters
and documents that had been earlier addressed to Georgian high-ranking
    officials but got no response.

Staff of the ombudsman's office asked the Armenian representatives
some questions, mainly about the status of school principals and
situation with the Armenian language. Summarizing results of the
meeting, the ombudsman administration's officials promised that issues
    raised would not remain unanswered.
