SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SERVICE STARTS ITS ACTIVITIES

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 10, NOYAN TAPAN. The Special Investigation
Service has launched its activities since December 10 with an
inauguration ceremony. The Service is not subject to any department,
the activities of the Service are directly controlled by the RA
Prosecutor General. The Service will investigate criminal cases
concerning state officials and electoral falsifications. Current
cases, as well as cases suspended before, which are subject to
investigation, will be examined by the Service. Andranik Mirzoyan,
the former Head of the Investigation Department of the RA Prosecutor
General's Office, which was liquidated on December 1, was appointed
Head of the Service by the decree of the President of the Republic
of Armenia. Marcel Matevosian, the former Head of the Department
of Struggle on Anti-Trafficking and Illegal Migration of People and
the former Deputy Head of the Investigation Department, was appointed
Deputy of Andranik Mirzoyan. 15 investigators, 5 out of whom are senior
investigators of especially important cases and 10 are investigators of
the leading group, are included in the Special Investigation Service.
The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia, who was present
at the inauguration ceremony, considered irrelevent the clamour set
up in connection with the adoption of the law, according to which
"the Service is created for imposing pressure." Andranik Mirzoyan in
his turn excluded the opportunity of pressure towards the Service:
the Service is not subject to any department, people, who have nothing
to do with the case, will have no entry into their territory.
The activities of the Special Investigation Service are regulated by
the RA Law on "Special Investigation Service", which became valid on
December 6.
