Turkish opposition leader calls on Aksu to resign

Baykal said that the murders of Cetin Emec, Muammer Aksoy and Hrant
Dink and the attack against the Council of State had all occurred
during the Interior Minister's term in office.

Güncelleme: 18:04 TSÝ 01 Þubat 2007 PerþembeANKARA - The leader of
Turkey's main opposition party on Thursday called on Interior
    Minister Abdulkadir Aksu to resign.

In an exclusive interview with television station NTV, Deniz Baykal,
the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) said that police
had received information 12 times about a plot to murder Turkish
Armenian journalist Hrant Dink but not action was taken. This meant
that the murder was committed within the knowledge of the police,
    Baykal said.

Although there was many valued officers on the police force the
organisation was paralysed, he said. As such, the CHP would table a
motion calling on the Interior Minister, the minister responsible for
the police force, to resign, he said.

`Turkey is entering a tough period. It is getting increased
polarised. Turkey is in need of a serious security force,' Baykal
said. Instead of looking for a mosquito the swamp should be drained,
    he said.

The murder of Dink on January 19 was carried out in order to make use
of it against article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, which covers the
crime of insulting Turkish identity, he claimed. He added that there
was a systematic campaign being carried out over article 301, which
had weakened the resistance of the current government on the issue.

`The criticisms targeting Turkey on this are wrong. If the government
bows to this campaign it is up them,' he said.
