    IMPORTANT MEASURES IMPLEMENTED IN ARMENIA'S ENERGY SECTOR IN 2006

    YEREVAN, January 24. /ARKA/. Last year was marked by activity in
    Armenia's energy sector, says an annual report RA Minister of Energy
    Armen Movsisyan presented to RA Premier Andranik Margaryan.
    The Press and Public Relations Department, RA Government, among the
    strategic measures implemented in the country's nuclear energy sector
    the Minister singled out the construction of a spent fuel storage and
    the enhancement of safety at the Armenian NPP in cooperation with
    international donor organizations.
    As regards electric energy, Movsisyan pointed out the importance of
    an Iranian-Armenian-Georgia Agreement on the construction of 400 kv
    high-voltage lines.
    As regards the encouragement of investments in the renewable energy
    and energy saving sectors, the Minister pointed out the importance of
    establishing a Fund of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, with
    the assistance of the Gafesjian Fund, World Bank, EBRD, as well as
    the Fund for Development of Small Hydro-Power Stations with the
    assistance of the German KFW Bank.
    The Minister pointed out that the construction of the Meghri-Kajaran
    section of the Iran-Armenia gas main was almost completed in 2006.
    The Minister also reported that gas-supply of 78,221 users was
    started or resumed in 2006. As a result, the number of gas users
    reached 443,000. A total of 750.35 kilometers of gas-supply network,
    1.17 kilometers of gas mains and 69 electrochemical protection
    stations were re-operated. P.T. -0--
