Free admission.
Evanston's TASTE OF ARMENIA Festival, hosted by St James Armenian
Church, serves up charcoal-grilled kebabs and homemade Armenian
delicacies, including healthy salads and homemade sarma made with
fresh-picked grapeleaves (nothing canned!). Few can resist the
bountiful table of our grandmas' pastries served with a steaming cup
of Armenian coffee (fortunes told on request!)
This year, the festival also adds a full day of Armenian cultural
offerings drawn from across the country, highlighting ancient and
modern aspects of the people who comprise the first Christian
nation:
--Special presentation of historical Armenian photos by Project SAVE
(www.projectsave.org) of Boston
--Direct from LA--two live performances by Armenian folk/rock star GOR
MKHITARIAN (www.gormusic.com) . Once the lead guitarist in
Armenia's most prominent rock band, Gor has won a dozen industry
awards and recorded five albums since launching a solo career in the
United States in 2001 which fuses traditional Armenian melodies with
rock and folk idioms.
--Folk dance performance by the Hamazkayin Sardarabad dance ensemble
--The festival's cultural table features a traditional market of
artisan handicrafts made in Armenia, as well as books, musical
recordings, and historical information.
Chicago's Hye Vibes plays live music for traditional line dances
throughout the afternoon. There will also be games for children.
Free parking available all day in the Maple Street Garage one block
west of the Church. St James is two blocks north of the Davis St
Evanston CTA/Metra train stations.
