YEREVAN, JUNE 5, NOYAN TAPAN. "The visit of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office
to the region is taking place on the threshold of the regular meeting
of the Presidents and we hope that this meeting will proceed by the
spirit of compromise," RA Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian stated
at the June 5 joint press conference with OSCE Chairman-in-Office,
Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.
He also expressed the hope that after the coming meeting of the
Presidents "it will be possible to register progress, which will give
a possibility to move forward in the direction of settlement of the
problem at a brisk pace."
In Vartan Oskanian's words, the Foreign Ministers' work will give some
basis to the Presidents of two countries for making decisions. "If
there is an agreement, progress will be registered, if not, we should
continue working at the level of Ministers."
In the words of Miguel Angel Moratinos, the sides will secure a
positive result only in case of being disposed optimistically. He
expressed the hope that the meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani
Presidents to be held on June 9 will register progress in the
relations: "The Minsk Group is ready to assist the sides, I think
there is a sufficient ground for settlement of this problem."
In response to Noyan Tapan's question, whether some steps are planned
to be taken to at last fulfil the only agreement on Nagorno Karabakh
conflict, signed within the framework of OSCE, which is aimed at
strengthening of cease-fire regime, but it is not fulfilled and
servicemen continue to die on the contact-line, Mr Moratinos said that
"this issue will be solved only within the framework of negotiations."
