ARMENIA TO BE ABLE TO SATISFY ITS NEEDS WITHIN 15-20 YEARS BY 40% DUE TO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES

Armenia will be able to satisfy its needs within 15-20 years by 40% due
to the alternative energy sources, deputy Energy Minister Ara Simonyan,
who participates in the third International exhibition-conference
dedicated to the renewable energy and energy-saving, told journalists
today.
As he said, development of the own energy base is a priority direction
in the Armenian government's activity. This fact is fixed in the
domestic energy development Concept till 2005 and the National Energy
Development Programme, approved by the republic's government. Special
attention will be paid to development of the hydroelectric potential,
wind and solar energy.
Presently, the matter concerns construction of three big and
medium-sized HPP - the Meghri (140 MW), Lori-Berd (60 MW) and Shnokh
(70 MW). Moreover, according to the domestic energy development
Concept, it is envisaged to reduce the power generation by small
HPP to 500 mln kWh that will make up 15% of the presently generated
volumes. As for the Meghri HPP, A. Simonyan said that the seventh
session of the Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission on
economic cooperation will be held in July, during which it is envisaged
to discuss the details of this project fulfillment.
