Armenia-NATO Relations
A STATE LONGING FOR NATO MEMBERSHIP MUST ALSO BE READY FOR IT.
Head of NATO Military Partenrship Department George Kathsirdakis,
after having a meeting with the representatives of the Armenian
military and law enforcement forces and Foreign Minister Vardan
Oskanian, said on a press conference that his first visit to Armenia
was rather effective. Being of Greek origin, Mr. Kathsirdakis spoke of
the millennia-long friendly relations between the Greeks and the
Armenians.
George Kathsirdakis has been member of NATO defense policy departments
as well as other international structures and took an active part in
the elaboration of the "Cooperation for Peace" program.
According to Kathsirdakis, NATO has various plans and programs of
cooperation with Armenia, much has been done and more there is still
to do. He emphasized that Armenia in its turn is interested in
cooperating with NATO. Before visiting Armenia, Kathsirdakis attended
a Russia-NATO discussion in Vilnius, during which rich perspectives of
enhancing the cooperation were revealed.
Mr. Kasthirdakis said that non only desire, but also readiness for
NATO membership is needed. He brought example of Georgie and Unkraine,
who made great progress on the way to membership, but still they are
not ready to enter the next phase of cooperation, not in 2008 anyway.
He said NATO can by no means force Turkey to establish neighborly
relations with Armenia, it can only advice. Establishment of stable
peace in the region requires more efforts from both the sides, he
said.
