MOST OF ALL SCHOOLCHILDREN SUFFER DURING EARTHQUAKES, UNICEF REPRESENTATIVE SAYS

    Noyan Tapan
    Mar 20 2007

YEREVAN, MARCH 20, NOYAN TAPAN. Lately UNICEF jointly with UN
International Secretariate for Reduction of Disasters Consequences
and Central Asia's Initiative for Protectiveness Against Earthquakes
had organized a two-day discussion on the subject "Schools Protected
from Earthquakes." As it was mentioned in the report provided to
Noyan Tapan from UN Children's Fund Armenian Office, the goal of
the discussion was to present how schools and communities can be
more prepared during earthquakes. Representatives of RA Ministry of
Education and Science, National Institute of Education, Academy of
Crisis Management, as well as headmasters and teachers of a number
of schools took part in the discussion.

"Disasters, including earthquakes, may take place at any moment
and in any place. Realizing their consequences for children, we are
obliged to prepare in advance for resisting them," representative of
UNICEF Sheldon Yett said. In his words, the international experience
and the destructive earthquake which took place in 1988 showed that
schoolchildren most of all suffer during earthquakes.
