KIELCE, Poland: Maciej Zurawski scored in the first half Wednesday
to guide Poland to a 1-0 win over Armenia in a European Championship
qualifier.
The Poles lead Group A with 16 points from seven matches. Portugal,
Finland and Serbia are second with 11 points from six.
Michal Zewlakow fed Zurawski with a pass in the box in the 26th
minute. Zurawski then turned and curled a low right-footed shot past
the diving goalkeeper and inside the far post.
The goal ends an almost 18-month international scoring-drought for
the Celtic striker.
The hosts dominated play throughout the match, and had a several
solid opportunities to add to its lead.
Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovski punched away midfielder Lukasz
Gargula's left-footed drive from the top of the area in the 71st,
while Zurawski sent a shot from 10 meters (yards) over the bar 10
minutes later.
Armenia, which has one point from five matches, struggled to mount
any serious attack and never really challenged the Poles.
