NO ARMENIAN PARTY TO HAVE MAJORITY IN NEW PARLIAMENT - POLL

Yerevan, 3 May: None of the political parties participating in the
[12 May] parliamentary election will be able to gain an absolute
majority in the new parliament, the head of the Sociometer Centre and
well-known sociologist, Aharon Adibekyan, told a news conference at
the Urbat discussion club today.
He said that the centre had conducted a public opinion poll among 1,650
citizens in all the 10 regions of the republic, on their preferences
in the forthcoming election.
Before announcing the results of the survey, Adibekyan stressed that 19
per cent of the people questioned intend to take part in the election
but have not decided who they will vote for. "This is the part of
the constituency that is expected to be bribed," the sociologist said.
Concerning the results of the survey, Adibekyan said that 34 per cent
out of 56.6 per cent of those who have decided on who to vote for,
favour the [member of the governing coalition] Republican Party of
Armenia and 32 per cent will vote for the Prosperous Armenia Party.
The Orinats Yerkir (Law-Governed Country) Party gained 12 per cent, the
[member of the governing coalition] Armenian Revolutionary Federation -
Dashnaktsutyun [ARFD] has 11.2 per cent and the National Unity Party
has 7 per cent.
The Dashink [Alliance] Party, headed by the former chief of the
Nagornyy Karabakh defence army [Samvel Babayan], had the most rapid
increase of rating. It gained 3 per cent. The Heritage Party headed
by Raffi Hovhannisyan gained 4.2 per cent. The People's Party headed
by Tigran Karapetyan had 4.8 per cent, and the United Labour Party
gained 3.6 per cent. The [opposition] People's Party of Armenia headed
by Stepan Demirchyan has an extremely low rating, 1.8 per cent,
"which can be explained by the fact that Stepan Demirchyan managed
to practically lose all his rating during the last four years. His
rating could be explained by the name and the authority of his father,
first secretary of the central committee of Armenia's Communist Party,
Karen Demirchyan, who was killed by terrorists in October 1999,"
the sociologist said.
Adibekyan stressed that if the single mandate and proportional seats
in parliament are added up, the results of the survey show that they
will be distributed in the following manner: the Republican Party
of Armenia will get 55-60 seats, the Prosperous Armenia Party 35-40
seats, the Orinats Yerkir Party and the ARFD eight to 12 seats, and
the Heritage Party, the National Unity Party, the People's Party,
the United Labour Party and the Dashink Party three to six seats,
Aharon Adibekyan said.
