THE DREAMY ATMOSPHERE OF LUMINATO

Hundreds of events and world premieres by Egoyan and Ataman in Toronto
Art creations floating in the air, street musicians and singers on the
"Art Boat", the rhythm of drums from all over the world at Queen's
Park, the free world premieres of two new movies by directors Atom
Egoyan and Kutlug Ataman, the art of Leonard Cohen, the most famous
B&W shots in the history of photojournalism, and theatre, dance,
literature.
>From June 1, Toronto will be invaded by a dreamy atmosphere brought
about by Luminato, a 10-day festival of art, from every corner of the
world and in every form. Luminato is the embodiment of the ambition
to turn Toronto into one of the world's most creative cities, with
over 100 events, hundreds of artists, thousands of spectators. Since
2006, over $10 million has been raised to fund the festival, which
is mostly enjoyed for free.
Here are a few of the events, not to be missed. On June 1, the Festival
will open with Auroras/Testimony, two world premieres of films by Atom
Egoyan and Kutlug Ataman, free at Artcore in the Distillery District,
running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Egoyan's Auroras is a reflection on the
life of Aurora Mardiganian and her tale of the massacre of Armenians
in Turkey, Ravished Armenia, set in the early 20th century. Ataman's
Testimony is a tribute to the woman who raised him as a child.
On June 3, for the first time Leonard Cohen will display his notes,
faces, nudes and landscapes depicted against the backdrop of his music
and poetry, in the halls of Strabinsky Gallery (122 Scollard Street),
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On June 4, Ryerson University will share with the public the black
and white photos of its Black Star Historical Photography Collection,
exploring the events, faces, and historical events immortalized in 70
years of photojournalism. The photos will be displayed at the First
Canadian Place Gallery (100 King Street), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Moving from
images to music, on June 4 and 5 the Distillery District will witness
two evenings devoted to Italian music, featuring Quartetto Gelato,
Francesco Pellegrino and Romina Di Gasbarro in The Neapolitan Show,
and Michael Occhipinti's Sicilian Jazz Project. The two evenings will
be part of Luminato at the Distillery, 10 days of music from all over
the world, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
