On November 9 the leader of the People's Party of Armenia Stepan
Demirchyan commented on the events in Georgia. He compared the
developments in Georgia with the April 2004 events in Armenia when the
opposition went on protest against the decision of the Constitutional
Court to hold a Referendum of Confidence in a year after the election
and solve the disputable issues.
"In both cases they used force. But in Georgia, as you know,
Saakashvili has appointed the date of the early presidential
election. He eventually fulfilled the demand of the protestors although
he could have not fulfilled it. In our case, in 2004 they used force
against peaceful protestors. It was one of the most vivid expressions
of the "kindness" of our government. The Constitutional Court made
a decision on the Referendum of Confidence which was not brought
into being. There is a major difference. In other words, in Georgia
they finally met the demand and appointed the day of the election,
in Armenia they used force, but the decision of the Constitutional
Court was not brought into being anyway," Stepan Demirchyan says.
