    ARMENIA TO HOLD PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN FEBRUARY NEXT YEAR

    Presidential elections in Armenia will be held on Feb. 19 next year,
    the country's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced on Friday.

    "On the basis of the constitution, the presidential election in Armenia
    will be held on Feb. 19, 2008," CEC Chairman Garegin Azarian said on
    public television.

    Under Armenia's constitution, a presidential election is held 50 days
    prior to the date of termination of powers of the active president. A
    person cannot hold the office of president for more than two five-year
    terms.

    President Robert Kocharian's second term ends in 2008. He was elected
    for the first time in spring 1998 and re-elected in 2003.

    As Feb. 19 is Tuesday, the authorities have declared it a day off work.
