NEXT OSCE MONITORING OF ARMENIAN-AZERBAIJANI FRONTLINE COMMENCES

frontline troops near the village of Ashagi Eskipara in the Azerbaijan
district of Gazakh commenced on 28 November, in compliance with a
mandate from the special representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office,
Andrzej Kasprzyk, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan reports.
Jaslan Nurtazin and Peter Key, field assistants to the OSCE
Chairman-in-Office's special envoy, are in charge of monitoring the
Azerbaijani side of the frontline. Field assistants Imre Palatinus and
Antal Herdiks will carry out the monitoring on the Armenian side of the
front, in the territory internationally recognized as Azerbaijani land.
Gazakh is located 520km west of Baku.
The conflict between the two countries of the South Caucasus began in
1988 due to Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since 1992,
Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the
Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding districts. In 1994,
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement, at which time
active hostilities ended. The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group
(Russia, France, and the US) are currently holding peaceful
negotiations.
