DARCHINYAN POUNDS HIS WAY TO ANOTHER TITLE

VIC Darchinyan last night claimed the vacant IBO super flyweight title,
but not before being tested by under-rated Filipino Frederico Catubay.

The big-punching Darchinyan stopped Catubay two minutes into the 12th
round in his first fight since losing the IBF and IBO flyweight titles
to another Filipino, Nonito Donaire, in July.

It was Darchinyan's first fight in Australia for 26 months -- his
past five fights were in Las Vegas -- and the Armenian-born power
puncher needed every bit of his class to thwart a brave opponent at
    the Auburn RSL.

"It was a hard fight. He was tough and it's actually good because I
can now learn from my mistakes," Darchinyan said.

Catubay refused to give in despite being on the receiving end of a
barrage of blows to both his head and body.

Catubay, 27, boasted a record of 20 wins and 13 losses going into
the bout, but unlike stablemate Donaire, he was unable to withstand
    Darchinyan's aggression.

"I'm happy to get this win. I want to win my world title, but I'm
not yet sure about a re-match with Donaire," Darchinyan said.

"That's something my manager will have to work out."

Catubay regularly provoked Darchinyan throughout the fight, with
"is that all you've got" type gestures.

But as the fight wore on, Darchinyan assumed control.

In the lead-up to the bout Darchinyan spoke of his desire to relax
and absorb his rival, rather than continue his rapid-fire style that
ultimately brought about his downfall against Donaire.

Darchinyan, 31, said he now plans to fight on the undercard of Danny
Green's world title bout in New York on December 1.
