NATIONAL UNITY VICE-CHAIRMAN DOES NOT EXCLUDE THAT LEVON TER-PETROSIAN CAN SUPPORT ARTASHES GEGHAMIAN'S CANDIDATURE AT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

    Sep 4, 2007

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 4, NOYAN TAPAN. The National Unity party calles
all political forces, including pro-governmental ones, for organizing
discussions dedicated to possible ways of taking the country out
of the current crisis. Koryun Arakelian, the Vice-Chairman of the
National Unity party, stated at the September 4 press conference.

In response to the question of what has changed in the position of the
National Unity, which lately accused the authorities of the complicated
situation formed in the country, and today invites them for taking
part in joint discussions, K. Arakelian said: "Nothing has changed. We
continue holding the opinion that first of all Robert Kocharian and
Serge Sargsian are responsible for the formed situation. However, the
situation has changed on the threshold of the presidential elections,
and we think that anti-crisis programs should be discussed." According
to K. Arakelian, so far, only the government and the National Unity
    party have such programs.

He confirmed the fact that a meeting between NU leader Artashes
Geghamian and first RA President Levon Ter-Petrosian has been held
    lately. In K. Arakelian's words, country's socio-economic situation,
possible domestic and foreign developments have been discussed during
the meeting. He did not exclude that in case of A. Geghamian's running
for the presidential elections L. Ter-Petrosian can support his
candidature. Meanwhile, K. Arakelian avoided to answer the question,
whether the issue of supporting L. Ter-Petrosian in case the latter
runs for the elections is being discussed.

He only said that an answer to that question will be given after NU's
congress, which is envisaged to be held after September 20. At the
very congress they will decide, whether Artashes Geghamian will run
for the upcoming presidential elections or not.
