OUR VICOTRY WILL BE VERY IMPRESSSIVE
KAREN KARAPETYAN, member of the RPA Parliamentary faction was the
guest-speaker of `Urbat' club yesterday. He began his speech with the
issues discussed in the sitting of the council the previous day.
Two decisions were made during the sitting: to convene the regular
congress on November 10 and set up an extra unit under the leadership
of Galoust Sahakayan, with the purpose of coordinating the party's
activities. `It is conditioned by the fact that the party has quite a
big structure; it has 130 thousand members, and increasing the number
of its units both on the higher echelons and on the bottom levels is
an objective requirement for a more proper organization of our
activity, taking into consideration the fact that we are in a
pre-election period,' he explained.
K. Karapetyan's overview of the pre-election processes was
extensive, and it included his personal observations. `All the
political factions were in the process of negotiations for several
months on end: for a period of 3-4 months, or if we take a more
profound approach - even before the Parliamentary elections. Their
negotiations seem to be coming to a close. My personal view is that
it just didn't produce any result.
Personally for me it was desirable, and I thought that at least 2,
and, why not, 3 poles would be formed, and they would unite purely on
the ideological front. And those poles would be formed based on the
psychology of supporting, rather than opposing one another. And such
pivots, as well as all the other remaining units would be presented
to the public with their programs and approaches, and the public
would make its choice.
Based on all the direct and indirect statements, I assume and
believe that no such pivots will be formed. I can say that I regret
about it. I also assume that 4-5 candidates will advance their
candidacy, which means separating the whole pro-Opposition
electorate. At the same time, it is unclear whether or not some part
of the electorate supporting the Opposition will vote for them.
The speaker finds that such observations lead to the thought that
there is no alternative to Serge Sargsyan, and the party will hold a
convincing victory. The long-term activity of their candidate in the
whole process of the country's accomplishment has, in the opinion of
the RPA leader, proven one thing, `he is a rather tenacious
personality. In the process of so many developments during the recent
years, including the war-time, the peaceful period, as well as the
period of state construction, he has proven his tenacity. I believe
it is within the scope of regular processes that a person's
accomplishments should be viewed.
As to Mr. Ter-Petrosyan's nomination, K. Karapetyan spoke about it
very briefly, `I never speak about things that do not exist. When he
makes a statement on his running for presidency, we will touch upon
the topic. According to the speaker, it is necessary to develop a
kind of tradition not only to the first President but also to all the
Presidents of the country, as an important symbol of the state, `What
I mean is unreasonable criticism; it is possible to speak about
omissions within the frameworks of logic.'
With regard to the issue of leadership, K. Karapetyan finds that
leaders are not appointed; nor do they nominate themselves. In the
estimation of the speaker, `A leader enjoys real support by the
people. It is still very early to speak about the leaders who can be
born and become accomplished today, as these are people for whom the
Parliamentary elections were the most important touchstone.'
The developments of the current stage of the negotiations taking
place on the pro-Opposition front allow the leader of the RPA faction
to make predictions on the single-stage victory in the Presidential
elections, `I consider that there are real chances for victory in the
first stage.'
