SIXTY-SIX PERCENT OF WOMEN ADMIT TO BEING SUBJECTED TO DIFFERENT FORMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS: According to a survey, commissioned
by the Women's Rights Center, a non-governmental Armenian organization,
poverty is the number one cause of domestic violence.

More specifically, 79 percent of questioned women admitted that lack
of education increases the possibility of domestic violence.

The poll was conducted by Turpanjian polling center. It has found
that 66 percent of women, aged 18-75, were subjected to psychological
violence, 46 percent sometimes or frequently, while 27 percent were
subjected to slight physical violence and 12 percent to heavy physical
    violence.

Only 29 percent of respondents said they sought a help, more frequently
from other family members. Only 6 percent sought help from police.

However, pollsters from the Turpanjian center believe these figures do
not represent the true picture as 14 percent of women they turned to,
refused to answer their questionnaires. Seventy-seven percent of them
explained the refusal by being busy, 18 percent said the subject did
not interest them and only 3 percent feared their husbands would get
    angry if learned.

The survey was conducted across Armenia to learn the women's reaction
    to domestic violence.
