NEWTON PULLS OUT OF ADL ANTI-BIGOTRY PROGRAM OVER GENOCIDE STANCE

    Boston Herald, United States
    By Associated Press
    Wednesday, September 19, 2007

NEWTON, Mass. - The city of Newton is ending its participation in the
    Anti-Defamation League's anti-bigotry program over the ADL's stance
on the World War I-era massacre of Armenians.

Newton Mayor David Cohen called his decision to pull out of the No
Place for Hate program a matter of conscience.

The ADL was heavily criticized this summer for failing to characterize
the killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

Watertown pulled out of No Place for Hate, and other towns were
considering doing the same when ADL president Abraham Foxman
    reconsidered his stance last month.

He said the killings were "tantamount to genocide."

But he refused to support a congressional resolution that labeled
    it genocide.

Some Armenians have demanded the ADL make a more explicit
acknowledgment of genocide and support the Congressional resolution.
