Author and Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul has decided not to attend a
writer's conference in Istanbul after several Islamist leaning papers
in Turkey launched a campaign against his visit.

The novelist decided not to attend the European Writers' Parliament
after the papers argued that it wasn't appropriate for Naipaul to
attend based on his 2001 statement when he compared the effects of
Islam to `the colonial abolition of identity', saying it `has had a
    calamitous effect on converted peoples'.
One Islamist newspaper, Milli, went so far as to say that `the infidel
    should not come'.

Cenk Gultekin, the EWP's intercultural relations officer, has said
that what started out as an intellectual criticism of Naipaul's
opinions on Islam turned into an assault on the writer employing hate
    speech.
