ARMENIA : SOCIAL REPORTING MEDIA: DEVELOPING CITIZEN JOURNALISM IN ARMENIA PROJECT

    TendersInfo - Project Notices
    November 23, 2011 Wednesday

    Implementation status : Approved
    Project Cost US$ 45 300
    Summary of the project description

Despite rapid growth in the development of the Armenian media which
recently has come in the form of increased internet accessibility,
there is still a worrying lack of access to information for more
than half of the Armenian population today, with the latest national
survey on internet accessibility conducted by the World Bank in 2008
revealing that only 5.8% of Armenians use the internet.

Citizen journalism has been identified as a possible means of
attracting interest in new technologies and existing civil society
resources, as well as promoting youth activism in the region. The
objective of this project is to provide a channel of citizen journalism
within two regions of Armenia by developing a network of regional
citizen journalists and creating a website which will cater to the
needs of targeted communities. In order to increase public awareness of
the project, leaflets and mini-guides will be printed and circulated
through local information channels, and the website will be linked
to the PanARMENIAN News Agency s site to ensure increased coverage
of regional news in the national media. A group of at least five
selected regional journalists and freelancers will be given training
in mentoring and facilitating citizen journalism. This training will
be delivered by a hired consultant and a project team who will also be
responsible for developing the website and delivering public outreach
    events in the target regions.

In achieving its goal, this project will contribute to increased
plurality and diversity of Armenian media, as well as enhancing
the capacity of communities which do not otherwise have access to
    effective information and communication channels.

    OBJECTIVE

To train at least 5 journalists and freelancers from targeted regions
in Armenia to become mentors and facilitators of citizen journalism,
and to create a website linked to a national news network in order to
provide a channel of citizen journalism which caters to the specific
information and communication needs of Armenian communities.
