CATHOLICOS ARAM CONTINUES VISIT TO WESTERN PRELACY

His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, is
continuing his pontifical visit to the Western Prelacy. On Monday the
mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, hosted a dinner for His
Holiness, and last Thursday His Holiness met with Californias
    governor, Jerry Brown.

The Pontiff has visited the Armenian schools in California, and the
Ararat Home. He celebrated Pontifical Divine Liturgies, delivered
lectures, met with young people and community leaders, and was honored
at many banquets and other functions. The visit will conclude this
    Sunday.

In his sermon last Sunday at St. Marys Church in Glendale, the
Catholicos told the thousands in attendance that Jesus Christ revealed
Himself to Armenia through Etchmiadzin, established our Church, and
centuries on remains engrained in the lives of the Armenian
people. Our Church became that which built and preserved our faith,
culture, and identity. The Church has had an invaluable role
throughout our history, from Khrimian Hayrig to Sardarabad to
Karabakh, to an independent Armenia, and the voice of our Church today
echoes loudly from Armenia to Karabakh to the Diaspora, breathing life
into all. Be active participants in the life of our Church, follow the
righteous path of Jesus Christ which leads to salvation.

the Pope will join the gathering on October 27 described as A Day of

Participants will explore the theme of the day and share a simple
frugal meal in solidarity with the suffering of so many men and women
who do not know peace. They will then proceed to the hilltop Basilica

    BIBLE READINGS

Bible readings for Sunday, October 23, Seventh Sunday of the
Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Discovery of the Holy Cross, are: Wisdom
    14:1-8; Isaiah 33:22-34; 1 Corinthians 1:18-24; Matthew 24:27-36.

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For
it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the
discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is
wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of his age? Has not
God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of
God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through
the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For
Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ
crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but
to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of
God and the wisdom of God.

    (1 Corinthians 18-24).

FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE HOLY CROSS

This Sunday, October 23, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of
the Discovery of the Holy Cross (Giut Khatchi). Empress Helena, mother
of Constantine and a devout Christian, wanted to find the True
Cross. She went to Golgotha (Calvary), which had become an obscure and
neglected place. According to some chronicles, it was an informed Jew
named Juda who pointed out the location. After excavation at the site,
three wooden crosses were found. In order to identify the True Cross,
the three crosses were successively placed on the body of a youth who
had just died. When one of the crosses was placed on him, the young
man came back to life. This was determined to be the True Cross. The
commemoration of this event take place on the Sunday closest to
October 26, and can vary from October 23 to 29.

Christs exact burial site was also located, and the Church of the Holy
Sepulcher was built on that spot in 335. The church was destroyed by
fire in 614 when the Persians invaded Jerusalem; it was subsequently
rebuilt. The current dome dates back to 1870. Three denominations
(Armenian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, and Russian Orthodox) administer
and maintain the church and surrounding grounds, unfortunately not
always harmoniously. Agreements strictly regulate times and places of
worship for each denomination. Ironically, for centuries a Muslim
family has been the custodian of the keys to the church, which is
within the walled Old City of Jerusalem.

Injustices, in the evening of October 27. The conference will continue
on Friday, October 28, with a series of panels for participants and
invited guests. Leading scholars will examine questions of
post-conflict justice in a comparative review of the Armenian

    CIVIL WAR ARMENIAN SOLDIER REMEMBERED

A few weeks ago we told you about the Civil War veteran Khachdour Paul
Garabedian, whose unmarked grave in a Philadelphia cemetery was found
and restored. Thanks to the teamwork of organizations and individuals
a beautiful khatchkar was created and dedicated at his
gravesite. Garabedian is believed to be the only Armenian officer to
serve in the U.S. Civil War and the first known Armenian to settle in
Philadelphia. On October 1 a dedication ceremony, grave blessing, and
requiem service took place with the participation of the community and
all five Philadelphia Armenian priests together with a joint choir in
    an impressive and memorable service.

The Philadelphia community came together to honor an Armenian veteran
    of the U.S. Civil War.

    G.W. BRIDGE AT 80

The George Washington Bridge, the 4,760-foot span over the Hudson
River linking Fort Lee, New Jersey and Washington Heights, New York,
opened 80 years ago on October 24, 1931. The bridge was officially
inaugurated and opened by New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt and
New Jersey Governor Morgan Larson. The designers of the bridge had the
foresight to make the structure strong enough for another level and
the lower deck opened to traffic in 1962. It is the most heavily
traveled bridge in the world with more than 106 million cars and
    trucks using the span annually.
