In addition to the regular business sessions and reports from Diocesan

His Holiness Vasken I at the consecration of St. Vartan Cathedral in April of 1968.

** 45th Anniversary of St. Vartan Cathedral
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, April 28, marks the 45th anniversary of the consecration of
New York's St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral.

The cathedral project originated in the 1930s, when the Armenian
community, led at the time by Archbishop (later Catholicos) Karekin
Hovsepian, first envisioned a project of building a `national home'
and spiritual center for all Armenians in the United States. After
years of planning (and an intervening world war), a central building
committee was established in 1948, and a group of community leaders
led by then-Bishop Tiran Nersoyan began acquiring the buildings and
real estate on the east side of Second Avenue between 34th and 35th
    streets.

After completing the first phase of construction (the square Diocesan
House designed by Zareh Sourian) in 1959 under the primacy of
Archbishop Sion Manoogian, the dream of a cathedral was realized in
the majestic structure standing today. Architect Walker O. Cain
patterned his design on Armenia's 7th-century church of St. Hripsime,
    among other historic sanctuaries.

Construction of the sanctuary filled the early years of the Archbishop
Torkom Manoogian's primacy. In April of 1968, His Holiness Vasken I,
the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, arrived in New
York to consecrate the new `national home,' and countless people
gathered to take part in the historic moment. For the many survivors
of the Armenian Genocide who had rebuilt their lives far from their
native lands, the cathedral served as a memorial to lost loves ones
and a symbol of the unwavering Armenian spirit. For their children and
grandchildren, it became a testament to the remarkable achievements of
a bold generation, and a call to preserve the Armenian faith and
    heritage in the New World.

A celebration of the cathedral's 45th anniversary will take place on
September 15, 2013, with details to be announced. Click on the

** Armenian Martyrs Day Observed at St. Vartan Cathedral
    ------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, April 24, worshipers gathered at New York's St. Vartan
Armenian Cathedral to take part in the annual Armenian Martyrs Day
liturgy, commemorating the 1.5 million souls eradicated in the 1915
    Genocide of the Armenians.

Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian presided over the events
of the day, including the liturgy and requiem service in front of the
cathedral's Martyrs Chapel, and the concluding madagh. The Very
Rev. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, cathedral dean, celebrated the Divine
Liturgy. Other clergy taking part in the service were the Very
Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan vicar, and the Very
    Rev. Fr. Sooren Chinchinian.

`It is important that we gather together on this one day to remember
how our ancestors died. But it is even more important, on every other
day of the year, for us to remember and honor the way they lived,'
Archbishop Barsamian said. `There could be no greater tribute to the
memory of our martyrs than for each one of us to live life with all
the courage, dignity, and faith which they embodied.'

Martyrs Day-related events also occurred on Sunday, April 21. The day
began with the Divine Liturgy at St. Vartan Cathedral, and was
followed by a requiem service and the blessing of madagh. The annual
Genocide Commemoration sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Knights and
Daughters of Vartan was held in Times Square later in the afternoon.

Local commemorations were held throughout the Diocese (please see item
    under `Parish News').

** Martyrs of 1915 Remembered on Capitol Hill
    ------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, April 24, the Eastern Diocese took part in an Armenian
Genocide observance hosted by the Congressional Caucus on Armenian
Issues in Washington, D.C. The gathering was held at the Russell Hart
Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill.

The evening commemoration included remarks by Congressmen; Ambassador
Tatoul Markarian, Armenia's Ambassador to the United States; and
Robert Avetisyan, Permanent Representative of Nagorno-Karabagh to the
    United States.

Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocese's Ecumenical Director,
delivered the opening prayer. He stressed the importance of
recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the effort to prevent future
human rights violations. Also representing the Eastern Diocese was the
Rev. Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan, pastor of St. Mary Church of Washington,

** Coptic Church Prays for End to Violence
    ------------------------------------------------------------

The Very Rev. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, dean of St. Vartan Armenian
Cathedral, represented Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian at
a special ecumenical service to pray for the `victims of violence in
the United States and abroad,' on Sunday, April 21.

The Coptic Orthodox Archdiocese of North America organized the
service, which was conceived as a memorial for their countrymen in
Egypt who have been victims of ongoing anti-Christian violence. But
the terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon earlier in the week
inspired a broadening of their plea for peace and unity against
    violence.

The service took place at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the center of New
York's Roman Catholic community. Fr. Kiledjian was among the clergymen
representing many Christian traditions at the service, during which he
read a prayer before the large crowd which had gathered for the
    emotional occasion.

** Conference on Armenian Monastic Life Held in Austria
    ------------------------------------------------------------

The Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, director of the Diocese's Krikor
and Clara Zorhab Information Center, was one of the featured speakers
at a conference held at the University of Salzburg, Austria, last
    week.

Titled `Monastic Life in the Armenian Church: Glorious Past,
Ecumenical Reconsidering, Challenge for the Future,' the conference
brought together specialists in Armenian and Eastern Church studies,
    monasticism, and ecumenism.

Speakers traced the history of Armenian monasticism from its origins
in the 4th century in Armenia and the Holy Land to its decline during
Ottoman times, and its near eradication as a result of the Armenian
Genocide. Also surveyed was monastic life as it has re-emerged in the
20th century in the Armenian Church's hierarchical centers.

** ACEF Continues to See Steady Growth
    ------------------------------------------------------------

The Armenian Church Endowment Fund has continued to see steady growth
throughout 2012, and remains at the heart of investment strategies for
parishes across the Diocese. Thanks to its uninterrupted annual
distribution, the fund has continuously helped parishes maintain vital
programs that benefit ministry, youth and the elderly, while providing
    the foundation for future projects.

In 2012, ACEF achieved a return of 11.3 percent, making it possible to
distribute 4.5 percent to its beneficiaries, and to reinvest the
additional income. `We fully expect to be showing positive numbers to
all our constituents,' said ACEF board chair Bruce Ballard, who will
present more detailed results at the Annual Diocesan Assembly in May.

The goal, Mr. Ballard said, is to achieve returns between 6 and 8
percent, and to continue distributing 4.5 percent annually (income
above the 4.5 percent mark is reinvested). At the same time, the board
hopes to attract new investors, giving the fund more investment
opportunity while reducing overall investment risk.

island of Aghtamar, as well as Kars and Van. The two-week trip, now in
its 18th year, will also include an extensive and enriching tour
    around Armenia.

FAR's trip provides an ideal opportunity for young professionals
between the ages of 23 and 40 to travel to Armenia as a group, and to
go beyond a tourist's itinerary to learn firsthand about Armenia's
place in the world. Participants will visit FAR's projects, engage in

** Parishioners Honored at Hye Pointe Church
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, visited the Armenian
Church of Hye Pointe in Haverhill, MA, last weekend, where he met with
parish leaders and joined the community as it honored dedicated
    parishioners for longtime service.

On Saturday, April 20, Archbishop Barsamian met with the parish
pastor, the Rev. Fr. Vart Gyozalian, and members of the parish council
for a strategic planning session. The Rev. Fr. Krikor Sabounjian,
pastor of the Church of the Holy Translators of Framingham, MA, and
James Kalustian, the parish's liaison to the Diocesan Council, also
took part in the meeting, which focused on the parish's plans to build
    a new church.

On Sunday, Fr. Gyozalian celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Archbishop
Barsamian presided over the service and delivered a homily. He
stressed that while sometimes the difficulties of life seem
insurmountable, as Christians we must have faith that `with God
anything is possible.' Archbishop Barsamian also spoke about the
Armenian martyrs of 1915, and the survivors who preserved their
heritage in new lands and passed on that rich legacy to today's
    generation of Armenian Christians.

A banquet followed services at Michael's Function Hall in
Haverhill. During the gathering, the community recognized parishioners
Michael and Sonia Ohanian, and Mary Tatoyian with the St. Vartan
Award. The late Richard Sarkis Serabian was honored
posthumously. Family members spoke about the honorees, and their
    dedication to the Armenian Church.

** A "Thank You" from Watertown
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Unexpectedly last week, the city of Watertown, MA, was the focus of
national attention during the dramatic search for the Boston Marathon
bombers. In the background of news footage, one could see signs of the
long-lasting, vibrant Armenian community-so often associated with
occasions of joy and celebration, but now, suddenly, a cause for
intense concern on the part of Armenians and our fellow citizens of
    America everywhere.

On Sunday, April 21, to express their gratitude to the first
responders and law enforcement officials who answered the call of duty
during these events, parishioners of the city's St. James Armenian
Church created a `Thank You' banner, which was displayed outside the
church's Charles Mosesian Cultural & Youth Center. Click here
