VALERIE BOYER ABOUT ARMENIAN GENOCIDE: DENYING THE CRIME KILLS THE VICTIMS TWICE

    12:43, 30 May, 2013

YEREVAN, MAY 30, ARMENPRESS: A high profile event on Armenian
genocide "A bridge for the reconciliation of Nations" was held in
the EP today. As the correspondent of Armenpress reports the event
was organized by the MEP Dr. Eleni Theocharous and the European
Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy. Members of the European
Parliament as well as the members of the Armenian delegation to the
Euronest Parliamentary Assembly were present amongst others at the
event with the keynote speaker Valerie Boyer-Member of the French
Parliament, UMP Marseille.Discussion on Genocide prevention law,
criminalization of genocide denial and the historical truth as well as
legal and historical aspects of the Armenian genocide were discussed
    and presented at the EP.

Mrs. Eleni Theocharous at her opening speech emphasized that "we must
insure that the perpetrators of the genocide are punished. Of course
we cannot punish their successors but we expect recognition and an
apology. I hope Turkey will accept and apologies for the genocide
committed against Armenians, Greeks and those is Asia Minor."

She referred to 117 monuments in 33 countries erected in the
commemoration of the Armenian genocide and Turkey's state of denial
and the refusal to accept its own history.

In his welcoming speech Armenian Ambassador to The Kingdom of Belgium,
Mr. Adonts talked about the necessity to recognize genocide since
it will facilitate and promote security and stability not only in
the SC region but in Europe. He stressed that it is necessary to
"rehabilitate the historical justice with a goal to prevent this
type of crimes in the future. We are not alone in condemnation: many
countries, parliaments including the European one have done it". He
also presented the current state of Armenian-Turkish relations stressed
that after the Armenian-Turkish protocols were signed in Zurich in
2009 Turkish side conditioned the ratification with a third country-
Azerbaijan and the resolution of the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict.

Gaspar Garabetyan- the president of the European Armenian Federation
for Justice and Democracy-referred to the title of the event as
the current reality "Armenia and Turkey are neighbors and they are
condemned to live together. Mr. Erdogan refers to Armenian genocide
as an Armenian propaganda. If he talks about normalization of our
relations why does not he ratify the protocols without putting
    preconditions"?

Mrs. Valerie Boyer, who was a keynote speaker as well as a French
MP who initiated the bill on Armenian genocide in 2011 referred to
it as a universal cause for Human Rights: "I believe if something
illegal happens it should be punished. It is not enough to state
something, one has to go further and punish", adding that she was
very disappointed when the law criminalizing Armenian Genocide was
censored by the Constitutional court of France. Mrs. Boyer said: "The
law which criminalizes the denial of Holocaust but not the Armenian
one creates inequality among the victims. France recognizes Armenian
genocide but cannot punish those who deny it. Denying the crime
kills the victims twice". Mrs. Boyer has proposed two further bills
for genocide criminalization. The MP also expressed her opposition
to Turkey's accession to the EU: "Turkey still occupies the soil
of another country, moreover refuses the genocide. Revisionism and
denial have to be recognized and punishe
