NUBARASHEN BURIAL OF TOXIC CHEMICALS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED IN -1-3 YEARS- MINISTER
YEREVAN, October 29. / ARKA /. Armenian emergency situations minister
Armen Yeritsyan said today the Nubarashen burial that contains about
600 tons of obsolete pesticides and persistent organic pollutants,
including DDT, located in the same name district of Yerevan will be
eliminated in 1-3 years.
He was speaking at an event marking the end of a two-year environmental
security project supported by the OSCE Yerevan Office that was designed
to address the risks of the toxic waste site.
The event attended by representatives of government, public and
international organizations presented the findings of the study.
The project was to determine the risks of the site to the environment
and human health, analyze the contents and geo-physical situation of
the landfill, and recommend several options for final remediation of
the site. The OSCE provided organizational, technical and financial
support for the project.
According to the minister, the site remains an environmental hazard,
as it is located in an active landslide zone, close to populated
areas and agricultural zones. He said the results of the study will
serve as a basis for further action.
"Now we have moved into the second phase of the project, when the
toxic chemicals are to be placed in special containers. In the
third stage we should eliminate the toxic chemicals," he said,
adding that the toxic chemicals can be either destroyed or moved
to a special area for a long-term conservation. -0- - See more at:
