I am debating between flying planes or helicopters. I know helicopters are cooler but why is the training so much more expensive? Is it just the fuel or is there more to it? I am trying to justify the extra cost to my parents who are helping me pay for school.

Helicopters are mechanically much more complex than airplanes, so the maintenance and insurance costs are higher. That drives up the hourly rate. However, the job market is less saturated. When you look at the helicopter license cost in Florida, you are paying for specialized skills like vertical takeoffs and hovering. If you train at a place like Pelican, you get to fly the Schweizer 300C which provides amazing hands-on experience you can't get in a plane.
