Arthur Abraham wins WBO Super Middleweight Championship

    Written by Joseph Herron

After falling short in his previous two title opportunities in the
talented 168 pound weight division, the third time proved to be the
charm for former Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KOs).

At the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany, the Armenian born fighter defeated
former champion Robert Stieglitz (42-3, 23 KOs) by winning a unanimous
twelve round decision in a very competitive and entertaining Super
Middleweight contest to become the new WBO titlist.

Coming into this crucial bout, most fight scribes believed Abraham to
be incapable of winning a world title in the big Super Middleweight
division because of his 5'9' frame and 72" reach. The 32 year old
fighter proved that his world class power and tight defense could
maintain his legitimacy in the packed division.

Although the Russian born boxer/puncher landed effective combinations
throughout the entire match, Abraham's shots were the more impactful
    and damaging.

The newly crowned two division champion was able to cut off the ring
effectively and land the cleaner and harder punches inside of the
    usually reliable Stieglitz defense.

The judges at ringside scored the contest 116-112, 115-113, and
116-112 in favor of "King" Arthur Abraham, handing Stieglitz only his
third professional loss in 45 bouts.

Despite Abraham's championship winning performance, it remains to be
seen if the German favorite can defeat the elite of the division.
After struggling with current IBF titlist Carl Froch in November of
2010 and the universally recognized 168 pound champion Andre Ward in
May of 2011, most boxing pundits believe that "King" Arthur's reign
will be short lived if he faces the best of the packed weight class.

Nonetheless, Arthur Abraham now owns a share of the Super Middleweight
crown and must be considered as one of the principals at 168 pounds
    once again.
