HISTORIAN: FRENCH SENATE'S DECISION IS A RESPONSE TO FROZEN ARMENIAN- TURKISH PROCESS

The bill approved by the French Senate is a response to the frozen
Armenian-Turkish process, Director of the History Institute of the
National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Ashot Melkonyan said during
    a press-conference on Wednesday.

He said that if resumed this process may curb the efforts to have
the Armenian Genocide recognized worldwide. "Since 1965 we have been
moving in the wrong direction: instead of persuading the United States
and Europe to recognize the Armenian Genocide we should have exerted
    pressure on Turkey," Melkonyan said.

He is concerned that the Russia-based Armenians are inactive and are
doing nothing to have a similar bill approved by the State Duma.

Concerning Azerbaijan's pro-Turkish attitude in the matter, the
historian said that it is a myth that Turks and Azeris are one nation.
"Not all of the Turkish leaders would like to see Azerbaijan as the
winner in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In fact, Turkey does not want
to have a strong neighbor even if it is Azerbaijan," Melkonyan said.
