    GOVERNMENT ALLOWS TO PUMP OUT 169 MILLION LITERS OF WATER FROM LAKE SEVAN

    YEREVAN

    The Armenian government has authorized today to pump out 169 million
    cubic meters of water from Armenia's largest Lake Sevan for irrigation
    purposes.

    Gagik Khachatrian, head of an office for implementation of agricultural
    programs, said despite snowy winter there is a shortage of water in
    reservoirs. According to Khachatrian, without rains the melting snow
    is absorbed by soil.

    "This year we have had little rains so far. However, this does not mean
    that we are going to take more water from Lake Sevan. We expect more
    rains in a few days and hope that reservoirs will get enough water,"
    he said.

    Lake Sevan is one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia;
    it is located in the heart of the Armenian plateau, at an altitude
    of 1914 meters. The lake is the main source of drinking water in the
    region.
