ARMENIA'S CASSATION COURT REFUSES TO RECONSIDER CASE OF LIFE PRISONER MHER YENOKYAN

The Cassation Court of Armenia has refused to reconsider the case
of life prisoner Mher Yenokyan, Zaruhi Muradyan, member of the civil
action group dealing with life imprisonment cases, said in an interview
    with ArmInfo.

In 1996 Yenokyan was accused of killing his fellow and was sentenced
to death. In 2003 the death penalty was replaced with life in prison.

Three months ago a group of lawyers asked the Cassation Court to
consider new facts proving Yenokyan's innocence.

June 10 the hopeless prisoner went on a thirst strike. He stopped it
two days later when he learned that there were proofs of his innocence.

But two days ago the Cassation Court notified the lawyers that the
    proofs were not sufficient.

"Yenokyan pleads not guilty. He says he did not kill the man but
regrets his failure to prevent the crime. His friend, Aram Harutyunyan,
who confessed that it was he who killed the man, was sentenced to
15 years in jail. We have new facts proving Yenokyan's innocence,
but the Cassation Court has refused to accept them. So, we are going
to organize an action of protest in front of the court," Muradyan said.
