MURDERS IN PRESENCE OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CANNOT REMAIN UNSOLVED - ARMENIAN OPPOSITION REP

Gagik Jhangiryan, an MP of the Armenian National Congress (ANC)
opposition bloc, has presented his initiative to set up an ad hoc
committee to investigate the March 1, 2008, murders in Armenia's
    capital.

The committee is supposed to examine and expose the murders and
study the legality of actions by Armenia's police and Prosecutor
    General's Office.

"Since we are not represented in Armenia's government or Prosecutor
General's Office, we should use the means at our disposal," Jhangiryan
    said.

According to him, each parliamentary group can have one representative
in the committee. Also, crossbenchers can be involved.

Jhangiryan is sure that at least some of the ten murders can be
    exposed within days.

"The authorities did their utmost to conceal the murders. They are
trying to convince the public the crimes cannot be exposed. But I say
that murders committed in the presence of thousands of people cannot
    remain unsolved," Jhangiryan said.

"Well, they do not want the public to know about injuries to
civilians. But what about injured servicemen? This is a matter of
    honor," Jhangiryan said.

The ANC group has not yet negotiated with any other group. However,
since all the parliamentary groups are for the murders to be solved,
Jhangiryan believes the bill will be approved.

"The authorities are concerned with solving the murders. Let us put
the bill on the agenda and wait for response," Jhangiryan said.
