Sevag Kherlopian, a junior physical education major and Kean University
men's soccer player, was walking out of his kinesiology class on
October 6, 2014 when he suddenly felt his phone vibrating from all
the incoming congratulatory messages. Kherlopian was a bit perplexed
as to why he was receiving so many messages, but received them with
a smile. What grabbed Kherlopian's attention was when a more specific
congratulatory messages reached his pocket. The text he received read:
"Congrats on the New Jersey Athletic Conference [NJAC] Player of the
Week and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference [ECAC] Rookie of the
    Week dude!"

Once Kherlopian began to investigate a little, he found the message
to be true. After a few slow, injury riddled weeks to begin his
inaugural collegiate campaign, his season picked up whilst earning
the NJAC and ECAC player of the week awards. A week later, Kherlopian
captured NJAC and ECAC Rookie of the Week honors.

Kherlopian is leading the team in goals with seven goals and two
assists for the year as of October 20, 2014. In the two weeks that
contributed to his recognitions, he netted four of those seven goals
and one of his assists. Three of his goals were the game winners
for three of the four wins during that span of time. Kherlopian's
assists came during overtime in Kean University's game against William
    Paterson University.

When head soccer coach for the men's team, Rob Irvine needed a goal,
he turned to his number 10, Kherlopian. Against New Jersey City
University, Irvine saw his team losing one to nothing in the second
half. The game was a must win for the Cougars. Kherlopian stepped up
and scored the winning goal, a two to one victory.

"My first impression of Sev is that he's a free spirit," Irvine said
with a smile. "He wasn't sure at first if he definitely wanted to
play, then he decided it was for him. He's definitely a handful for
opposition defending and can do some things that others can't," Irvine
continued. Irvine's synopsis of Kherlopian off the field correlates
with just about everybody who gets the chance to know him. His smile
is contagious and he's got the laid back persona of a California kid,
though his family hails from the country Armenia.

Kherlopian has been at Kean since 2011, yet the Cougar's talisman is
currently in his first season for men's soccer. "I never took soccer
seriously until this past spring and decided to play this year because
I didn't want to regret not playing college soccer," said Kherlopian.

"Rob [Irvine] recruited me in the Spring and convinced me to play
for the school, and I'm glad I did," Kherlopian stated.

Kherlopian is pursuing a degree in physical education with the hopes
of being a high school gym teacher and coach soccer one day. "I want
to be a gym teacher because I've always loved sports my whole life,"
Kherlopian said, "But if I had the opportunity to coach a college
team I'd love to do that." When asked about his personal success,
Kherlopian is always quick to spread the love to his teammates.

"Joining the team has been a lot of fun so far," said Kherlopian. "The
friends I made are amazing. At the beginning I didn't know anyone, but
I've gotten to know everyone more and it's been fantastic. I couldn't
have done any of this without them." Kherlopian was appreciative of
his current recognitions, and even more appreciative of the team that
helped him get where he is today.
