HIS HOLINESS ARAM I IS ELECTED AS ONE OF THE NEW PRESIDENTS
OF THE MIDDLE EAST COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
The General Assembly of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) convened
in Cyprus elected His Holiness Aram I as its one of the new presidents.
The Council groups the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and other
churches in the Middle East.
During the past 15 years, the Catholicos has given up his turn to be elected
as President of MECC in favor of the Spiritual Heads of the Coptic Orthodox
and Syrian Orthodox Churches, Patriarchs Shnouda III and Zakka Iwas I
respectively, given his busy agenda as Moderator of the World Council of
Churches.
