Save yourselves, wrongdoers-to-be, and the country
The recent incident in Hadrut and the actions of a person regarding
this incident made me view the government-citizen relation in a new
light. What happened is usual for the current moral and psychological
atmosphere, but extraordinary for its happy end and the chance to be
a positive precedent.
As well as for the principled, conscientious and generous Citizen.
With the connivance of the regional administration, part of the land
that belongs to a school was allocated for some construction, and one
of the "powerful people" of the region has already started building
a building on the land that belongs to the nursery school. It raised
a surge of protest in both schools. They tried to ease the surge but
could not make the teacher of Russian Nelly Kasparova silent. Nelly
Kasparova is famous in the region, she was an activist of the Artsakh
movement, a living legend.
The daughter of the hero of the Soviet Union Ashot Kasparov fought
with all the possible means. She sent telegrams to the governments of
Armenia and NKR, activists, the media and journalists. It was a voice
in the wilderness, however. At night she gathered scrap metal and threw
into the building site to delay the construction. In the morning they
cleared everything away. But she did not give up easily. The woman,
who is not young anymore, continued to build justice with her fragile
hands. When she was already in despair, she wrote "hands off our
school" on the walls of the school.
She was taken to the police department. Since everyone in Hadrut
knows Nelly, the police tried to somehow settle the problem. The
governor of the region also arrived at the police department. But it
was Nelly Kasparova who set the rules, to give the people involved in
this incident a chance to save their reputation, she said. Otherwise,
she threatened to go on a hunger strike at the center of Hadrut. Her
proposal was to leave the land with the school and donate the building
to the nursery school.
The human, the citizen, the patriot won this battle alone. Will
based on patriotism, kindness and generosity won. Someone else would
break down.
Perhaps this is what her opponents felt. And met her proposal. Now
Nelly is asking us not to write about the details of this incident
(although she has all the documents at hand), begs not to criticize
her opponents, for they have admitted their mistake.
I have forgiven them, she says. "We must give everyone a chance to
become better. Please write about the good things, I do not want you
to write about bad things. Justice prevailed and this is important,
and we all had a contribution."
Moral: We must fight against wrongdoing, saving not only our souls
and the country but also the wrongdoers-to-be. This is the true way
of the Citizen, and not connivance, servility and fear.
