VIKTOR SOGHOMONYAN: KARABAKH'S INDEPENDENCE HAS NO ALTERNATIVE

RA Presidentï~^'s Spokesman Viktor Soghomonyan told a news
conference today that ï~^"Nagorno Karabakhï~^'s independence has no
alternative.ï~^" Mr. Soghomonyan called ï~^"uselessï~^" the draft
law on recognition of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic by the Republic
of Armenia presented by ï~^"Heritageï~^" Party.

Viktor Soghomonyan declared that Armenia has long recognized the
independence of NKR, which is evidenced by RA President Robert
Kocharyanï~^'s presence at the recent swearing in ceremony of Bako
    Sahakyan.

Commenting on the initiative of GUAM member states to discuss the
ï~^"frozen conflictsï~^" in the framework of the UN General Assembly
session, the Presidentï~^'s Spokesman said the OSCE Minsk Group format
is the best for the resolution of the Karabakh issue and the attempts
to transfer the process to other structures are not coherent.

RA Presidentï~^'s Spokesman Viktor Soghomonyan declared in Yerevan
today that the leader of the country does not conceal that he would
like to see Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan as the next President
    of Armenia.

Commenting on the possible participation of ex-President Levon
Ter-Petrosyan in the presidential elections, Viktor Soghomonyan
said ï~^"participation in elections is his constitutional right, but
Levon-Ter-Petrosyan must decide himself the expediency of the step.ï~^"

Viktor Soghomonyan said Armenia has no expectations for improvement
of relations with Turkey, connected with Abdullah Gulï~^'s election
as the President of the country.

The Spokesman noted that Abdullah Gul had been Turkeyï~^'s Foreign
Minister before the elections, and ï~^"if the political force he
represented really wished to improve the relations with Armenia,
nothing would prevent it from taking corresponding steps.ï~^"
